Description
Monty is a carefully considered residence nestled among the dense inner-urban back streets of Richmond. Conceived as a place for entertaining as well as retreat, the design balances openness and intimacy, allowing daily life to unfold in privacy, yet still filled with natural light despite close proximity to neighbouring properties.
Behind a modest heritage façade at street level, the original dwelling was retained and integrated with a contemporary extension. A reverse living arrangement elevates the primary kitchen, dining and living spaces, allowing these areas to capture natural light, ventilation and long views.
The upper level is strategically zoned through variations in ceiling height and screening, creating distinct areas within a single, generous volume. Private spaces are located on the ground level, with guests able to move directly upstairs from the entry without passing bedrooms or studies.
Outside, ivory brickwork complements the original masonry's tone and texture, allowing the new contemporary form to be read as distinct. Metal window shrouds and screens provide privacy and sun control, adding depth and rhythm to the external architecture.
Inside, the interiors are warm, light and calm, emphasising the character of brick, limestone benchtops, mosaic tiles and joinery. Timber spanning floors and ceilings envelop the upper-level living spaces, while lighter finishes are used on the lower level. Higher window sills, planters and screening allow sky views while maintaining privacy.
Atop the home is its crowning glory. A largely concealed rooftop terrace offers a generous outdoor entertaining space, connected to the spaces below by a sculptural spiral staircase and surrounded by uninterrupted views of Richmond Hill, the CBD and the lights of the MCG.
Monty is a home of smarts and seclusion. Working within the constraints of its inner-city site, it opens to a layered and light-filled experience, balancing privacy, outlooks and quietly elevated urban living.
